I have the opportunity to get a 50cc Chinese scooter that goes by the name of "solara" for $500 total. Is this a waste of my money? I don't really have time to tweak it because I'm in school and stay really busy.

If you dont have time to work on it then do not buy it. Buy a name brand scooter and you will be better off. For $500 this time of year you can buy a really nice used Japanese scooter. Look for a Honda Metropolitan they are good scooters and last forever.

I would have to agree with Enviromoto, Chinese scooters parts are cheap, but, if you do not have the time to do your own work shop bills get expencive. You will be better served with a used Japanese or Taiwanese scooter. I suggest you look for a nice used Kymco or SYM, if not, try for a Honda, they are all good scooters that require little attention besides normal oil changes (Crank case and Gear) and cleaning/changing the air filter. Good luck with what ever you end up getting!
