Hey all, I was riding a friends scooter today and noticed something freaky. I was going about 40 mph and when I started applying the brakes for an upcoming stop sign. As I did this the handle bars started shaking/shimming back and forth. It was a pretty serious shaking. The handle bars felt like they were going to break free from the bike.
My buddy says it's been like this since he bought the scoot (May 08). The weird this is when the bike is at a stop there is no "play" in the front end. He just assumed it was the ABS. Obviously it's something to do with the front brake. I checked the front rotor and it pretty "true". Could the ABS have something to do with it? Anyone had this problem or have any suggestions as to what could be causing this and is there a fix?
Thanks

I have the same problem but i have some front to back movement on the front wheel when bike is on center stand. I think the lower steering bearing might be bad. if there is one.

You need to check the steering stem to see if it is tight or not, a loose steering head can be a problem. They don't grease the bearings at the factory, so it might be a good time to grease them too. The steering head is the shaft that the handlebar pivots on, leading to the forks. Check the handlebar where it bolts on for loose bolts, nuts or cracks. Drop the front wheel down to see if the wheel bearings are Ok or not. Check the rear axle nut to see if it is loose. Check the support strut for the axle to see if it is loose or the support bearings for the rear axle are loose or bad. Check the motor mount to see if the bolts are loose or the rubber grommets are deteriorated and bad. Check where the shocks mount to the engine and frame to see if they are OK.
If that all checks out, then you can check the wheels to see if they are out of round or wobbly. Don't bother much with the tires if they are OEM, they are already horrible to start.
