My set only goes up to 16mm and it's too small for oil drain bolt. What size will I need? Thanks.

No problem. You definitely need a good metric set to work on these bikes. Most common sizes you need are 7, 8, 10, 12, 18 and 19.

Well I did a full PDI (obviously didn't change fluid yet), and didn't need more than 16.

You need an 18 for the spark plug and the 19 for the oil. Pretty much everything else can use the smaller sockets.

I personally use a 3/4 socket, because it is 6 sided, and fits more snug than my 19mm (both craftsman sockets)....but then again, I don't monkey the oil drain bolt on, so I never get rounded edges....so far.

I just drained the CVT gear oil during the initial PDI and only about 1/2 cup came out after 20 minutes. Is this normal? Does anyone know the gear oil capacity of the CVT? Thanks

250-300ml is supposed to be in there.

Thanks Hugh Mine doesn't hold much, plus many seem to come from the factory without the proper amount of oil installed. You can rock your scooter gently to make sure you get everything out (maybe even switch it to the side stand), but I doubt you'll be getting much more out. I like to squirt a little oil in there before I put the drain bolt back on, just so it may catch some more of the old nasty oil and help it drain out (I do this with any oil change).

josetann/wxguru,
Thanks for the input. There was nowhere near 250 ml in it. I'll add a little bit of synthetic oil with the plug still out just to wash it out before I fill it up. I'll try and measure how much oil it takes to fill it so that I'll know in the future.
Regards, Hugh

Regards, Hugh Just so you know, I think synthetic is fine for the CVT, but NOT the main engine during the break-in period. Wait until you have at least a thousand miles on it before you switch to synthetic for the engine. Also, overfilling the CVT by a small amount should not hurt it (heck, I just poured it in until it came out the top, the excess should come out fine, but that is not the correct way to do it), but you need to make sure you don't overfill the engine oil.

i use a crescent wrench on my oil drain plug AND spark plug.
side note: when re-installing the drain plug make sure your filter screen and spring are in there first and don't over tighten the drain plug

Fill it until the oil overflows method is OK for the GY6 and CFMoto engines when doing gear oil changes but not for the Linhai design. Use 250-300 ml. or you may have a mess when the excess oil blows out the vent tube. No harm will be done here with an overfill but use the proper method to do the job right!
Crescent wrenches are great for some jobs but not for these types. Use the proper socket or risk damaging those plugs.

No harm will be done here with an overfill but use the proper method to do the job right! Oh I know, but I was just lazy and know I need to give the scooter a good wash anyways, so figured heck with it. That's why I said it wasn't the correct way to do it, and stressed to NOT be lazy with the engine oil, it's crucial to get it right. Actually I was going to check the CVT oil level (I didn't want that much of a mess) before it got too full, but then it came spilling out the top. At least I know not to freak out about it, though I guess the proper thing would have been to drain and try again. Had I overfilled the engine oil in that manner, I would have definitely drained some out.

OOPS! I filled until the fluid was at the top of the fill port. It took 17 oz or 502 ml. I'll drain about 7 oz (207 ml) out tomorrow morning. The information that I read must have been for 244 cc engine. Damn you guys age good! . Thanks. Hugh

One other note, most of the gear oil that you buy have a measuring device and "window" on the side of the bottle. I am using the wal mart Super Tech synthetic, and it has the window on the side and shows measurements in mls.....so it is really easy.

I purchased Valvoline at NAPA and now that you mentioned it, this bottle also has a calibrated window on the side. I would guess that Wal-Mart was a more cost effective choice. At least now the next gear oil change will be a lot easier. Thanks again.

In a pinch, I had to use a left-handed metric crescent wrench on mine, but I'll get the proper tool for future use.
