I been having battery charging problem since I got my scoot. I was getting readings of about 13.2 volts while revving the engine. Too low to charge the battery. Yesterday I finally decided to do a second PDI to figure out the problem. I got lucky. I found the problem within minutes. The charging system was not grounded properly. When I unscrewed the ground to check it, I found the ground wires were grounded to a nice coat of black paint. Paint in not a good conductor. I took some sand paper and sanded down to nice shiny metal. I then hooked up the three ground wires. Now for the test. Unlike in the past, my volts jumped immediately to 13.8 volts by just starting the engine. I then revved the engine. 14.5 volts!! ;D I know there is a lot to things that can cause you battery not to charged. Hopefully some of you will get lucky, like I did, and just have a bad ground. Check out to pics to see where my trouble was. i285.photobucket.com/albums/ll63/firstscoot/100_0466.jpgi285.photobucket.com/albums/ll63/firstscoot/100_0447.jpgi285.photobucket.com/albums/ll63/firstscoot/100_0462.jpgi285.photobucket.com/albums/ll63/firstscoot/100_0464.jpgNow for the fun part. Putting the scoot back togather!

yep, i had the exact same thing on my MC54 about two weeks after i picked it up. I wrote about it in the 250 forum.
When people tell me that they are having chargng problems the first thing I tell them is "check your grounds"

I put the scoot back together yesterday. I went for a spin last night. It's nice to have bright head lights that don't dim when I accelerate.

Nice job. Don't think that you needed to take everything apart. That must have beena PITA to get all those panels off. But must have made things easier to daiginos.
Good job.

Actually, taking off the body panels on MC-54-250 scooters is not all that complicated, I can take off all the body panels within 30 minutes:

I wanted to do a second or more complete PDI as I was trouble shooting the charging problem. That's why I took everything off. I found a few bolts that needed to be snugged, shortened a couple of vacuum lines, and found one bolt that was really loose.

You have power going to ground somewhere. The most common place is the gang connector for the license plate light. The male connector from the wiring harness has a tendency for the two wires going into it to touch each other and cause power to ground, check this first since it's so problematic. Otherwise, somewhere in your wiring, you might have a hot wire that has rubbed on a piece of metal and is shorting on the frame somewhere, or perhaps another bad gang connector somewhere.

Looks like not all ground connections are created equal: Just curious, has anyone else tried upgrading their battery/ground cables? 4AWG 24" neg battery cable, 6AWG 6" ground to block cable, MC-54B Linhai setup.

Why do you want to upgrade? Why do you want problems? I not the smartest guy in the world but I'm also not the dumbest. I don't get your response. Are you saying that you will have problems if you don't upgrade your gound to 4AWG?

I think you are right, sounds like it is running at full charge, if it is doing that all the time, you will ruin the battery, your lights might burn out faster also.
