Saddlebags « Thread Started on Dec 8, 2010, 11:32pm »
Just thought I'd throw this out there. Years ago, my wife and I wanted to go to Cape Breton, we needed some type of saddlebags to carry our stuff, & money was tight, so I seeked alternatives. In 1976 I bought a set of genuine leather saddlebags designed for horses. These worked fine, but they went with the bike. Now I wondered what there was out there in 2010.
Well guess what? All kinds, all sizes, shapes, colors, etc. But the best part of all is the price,
Google the horse saddlebags and see if there is something you might like at a much cheaper price than motorcycle bags.

Saddlebags of this kind are an easy solution for a scooter.....you simply raise the seat, slap on the bags, and close the seat. There must be an adjustment possible the get the bags to hang at the right height and angle, so you avoid the exhaust and other parts that move with the suspension.
Real saddlebags for cycles might be a better solution......they can be had in a variety of sizes/shapes, with multiple attachment points, rain covers, heat-resistant bottoms, etc.
I picked up a set off Craig's List for cheap bucks.

I picked these up from a local store for $25 and they fit my needs. They are not to close to the exhaust, and my new girlfriend used a sewing machine to adjust the strap so that it fits perfect. Its nice and it was cheap and it works great.

It is amazing and it does a wonderful job. I could not ask for a better scooter. And it kicks the Chinese bikes off the line all day long. Drives them nuts.

My first scooter was the 1987 Elite 50. My father bought it new and passed it down to me in 2005. It finally passed into scooter infinity June 2010. I never had an issue with the bike, except when dumping the bike full throttle chasing my Great Dane.

Hey they have patterned duct tape as well now. After seeing the driveway i would think you might go nuts for the zebra stripe duct tape they sell now. Its everywhere auto stores, dollar stores, wal mart. My dad re fabrics seats for a living, but would not be economical as i am in TN I bet if you looked around you could find a boat or other upholsterer that would re do your seat cheap.

That's an old pic, I had upgraded to thicker black ducked tape, but unfortunately she has passed on to the junk yard back in April. Head on collision with a pickup at about 40mph.
Funny thing is she still started up and ran so the engine was fine.
Ended up getting a $750 settlement for the bike replacement which is 300 more then I paid for it.

For a second I thought your scoot was made of painted concrete. (Well, easy to fix body damage anyhow LOL!)
Here's a write up on how to make saddlebags using canvas bags from a military surplus store. The bags are pretty durable (thick canvas and beefy zippers, straps, and buckles), but I doubt they are weatherproof.
