www.bmsmotor.com/scooter/product_15727_ASTRO_150.htmlSo i've been thinking about getting a scooter sooner or later and read that chinese brands suck, but I found this company and this particular scooter, I like the styling and price (1700 usd shipped). Does anyone have any experience with this company or this model? They are BBB accreddited and seem to be good enough quality for the price , gy6 engine, etcetera.

It's a 150cc Ruckus Clone by BMS. You could do much worse than this bike.

if you get this understand BMS is a distributor, not a brand. most likely Znen builds this. or some other. the only advantage to buying BMS is if you get it from a local store. BMS usually gives a 1 year / 12,000 mile parts and labor warranty in that instance. so its in the best interest of BMS and its dealers to have the scoots running right. online sales do not get the same warranty BMS pays in parts and discounts for the labor done on a warranty claim. this is typical in the industry, but BMS give such small labor credits the dealer really does not benefit from doing warranty work and wants the scoot running right for that reason all that said that is the "Big Ruckus" clone except with a 150cc instead of a 250cc as the Honda version has. this thread is interesting with lotsa info from a buyer: advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=710880and here is a 50cc Ruck clone but with the 150cc engine of the Big Ruck clone! www.superiorpowersports.com/150cc_gas_scooter_p/sn150sc-jm.htmhere is a message board to browse where guys take apart Rucks and Ruck clones and put 'em back together as super scoots! totalruckus.com/phpBB3/index.phpand a little discussion where you can see the argument between Honda and clone owners honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2982629you see Ruck owners started dropping chinese gy6 engines into their slow ass Honda Rucks. it became commonplace. long story short....then some would pay $2500 for a NEW Honda Ruck with the intent to gut it and put chinese 150 mechanicals, suspension, and electricals in. it all needs to be swapped to make it work. didn't make sense to many non Honda fanatics to pay $2500 for a frame that says "Honda"....so they just buy the clone 150 scoots and use the money saved on the Honda to pimp 'em out and beef 'em up! same scoot as the BMS for $1825, shipped. seller is crap but just want to give you the heads up. "BMS" means nothing unless bought from a dealer. online sale scoots do not carry the BMS 1 year parts / labor warranty even if it says BMS on the scoot www.scooterdepot.us/znen-kingkong-150cc-gas-moped-ssr-rowdy-motor-scooters-p-579.html

Hm, didn't know BMS wasn't a manufacturer. So would that mean this has no quality advantage as compared to a no name "MC-XX" sub-$1000 scooter? I was looking at this one thinking I wouldn't have to do all the oil/fuel lines/spark plug changing like with the really cheap ones, also I found it for cheaper elsewhere, is "gokartusa" a good website?. And In your opinion is this still a good deal just needs to be taken care of a bit?

BTW, Does anyone know if this model is considered a scooter or motorcycle to insurance companies? I remember hearing/reading that the bike needs a "step-through frame" in order to qualify for scooter insurance rates.

You sure, do they factor in the cc 'cause motorcycle insurance would kill me, that's the whole reason I'm thinking of a scooter!

Nevermind, Just got a quote from Geico, only 172 a year for a 150 cc scooter. And only $95 from progressive!!!! Wow very cheap, I mean it's only basic property damage but still. Read good things about this scooter and will probably get it once I get the cash up.

though bms is not a "brand", they do have standards. A lot of chinese manufacturing does a better job if someone pays for a better job. bms does. that said, don;t go into a purchase if you are of the mindset that chinese is junk. go into this purchase with the mindset that if you know your way around an engine or are willing to learn, you'll get a great deal and many miles of enjoyment.

i agree with the above poster to some extent. and sure, BMS does get some consideration as a major distributor for trim, paint, badging, and some improved hardware and mechanical parts. but imo for the most part any Znen made scoot (such as the SSR Big Ruck clone i linked) which matches it is just as well. all these scooters would have come off the same assembly line concerning all the basics on the scoots this means they will all be around the same price. IF you (TS) find one much cheaper, it could be a "knock off of a knock off" from some no name chinese company. you don't want that and so be careful!! if in any doubt simply ask "is this one made by ZNEN, same as the BMS ASTRO 150" if the answer is "no" don't buy it or research the manufacturer here at scootdawg before you do the BMS price is fair if shipped. as you can see by that thread i linked a couple years ago someone paid around $1500. labor conditions in china along with other factors have forced prices up, recently as the poster above said, go in with a certain mindset. if you need this scoot for rock solid reliability, well, its a crap shoot. but as you can tell by reading the forum very often with some after purchase PDI and tweaking these scoots can run well for awhile. how long? well, you bought a $1500 scooter. finding out how long it runs is half the fun oh, and both BMS dealers i have visited SAY they change out all hoses, lines, etc during the PDI. whether you do or not, a proper PDI is still mandatory imo

I ordered a SSR Rowdy 150 from here. It's $1485 now, I got it for $30 less. I placed the order a couple of weeks ago, and the bike is held up in customs. I've read posts of other people who've ordered this same bike from that site, so I trust they're legit. Once the bike comes in, I'll try to document my work and experience with it. AFAIK, it's the same bike as the BMS Astro 150. It's made by ZNEN, just that they add in a few more chrome parts than SSR. I just want something that works and isn't expensive. PEACE.
