Newbie here, just did a quick search but came up blank. I find it hard to believe that no one has posted about a Kymco 200S so maybe I didn't plug it in right.
Anyway, I just bought a slightly used 200s from a co-worker, it's a 2009 model w 700 miles on it. Mint condition for $1,600. I think I made a good buy! What are your thoughts on the purchase and the bike itself. It came with a rear bag and a full windshield.
I don't have the endorsement yet but plan on getting it soon, still have to reg. the unit. Thanks in advance for helping the newbie.

Thanks for the welcome! I don't know how to post photos, I'm not very savvy that way. If it helps it's a red one, not crazy about the color but the price was right and I figure higher visability at least.
I'll keep a low profile on the bragging, I picked it up as a way of saving a few bucks on gas when fuel goes back up, also saves me time looking for parking around work.
I'll be looking for any tips I can get on oil changes etc. that you all might have for me in time to come. Glad to be part of the forum, hopefully become part of the group too.

Last time I looked Taiwan was in Asia... the Kymcos are made in China... just like the GY6s
They are a good scooter...no doubt about it.
You got a great buy... change the oil every 400-500 miles
Repainting body panels with 3 coats of clear is about $150. Most body shops will do it on their lunch hour for cash...

Last time I checked I said nothing about Chinese or Taiwanese made. I just said the better of the Asain scoots ...... So there's your next argument.

kymco is a great scoot, you did good. and kymco is a Taiwanese company, not Chinese. while i don't argue they have some facilities in china and Vietnam (they are a large company with their hands in a lot of cookie jars) the scoots are primarily made in Taiwan and any parts made elsewhere are held to the same quality control (they are kymco owned plants, not farmed out to someone else and nothing like a typical chinese scoot). they even make the engine for the BMW g450 X enduro. www.dealernews.com/dealernews/Breaking+News/BMW-Taps-KYMCO/ArticleStandard/Article/detail/481696

Yes, very good scooters. Kymco and SYM used to be the same company, 45 years in the trade, top Taiwanese quality (almost same as Japanese now).

Thank you all very much. I'm looking for basic info at this point, is my eng the GY6 that I see in these pages? How many miles assuming normal wear should I expect out of the unit as a whole? Owning a scooter is new for me almost completely, I had a Honda spree back in the 80's when I was a kid, so any tips you care to pass along will help.
Change the oil every 500 miles? OK no problem, any particular filter to use? Any tips on making the change? Cost of an oil filter and do I need to go to a scoot shop to buy them?

Changing every 1500 miles is usually fine - read the handbook.

No the engine isn't a GY6 and parts are not generally interchangeable

I believe they have an extra stud for the cylinder/head than the other GY6 , or at least my 125 does.

As for the scoot itself I've been looking for awhile now. Back when fuel prices hit $4.00 per gal. I started looking and lucky that I can be I came across this one from a guy at work just as winter is setting in. He upgraded to a Burgman 650 (I think) and wanted to onload his older smaller one. It'll be used mainly as a commuter bike back and forth to work and around town on short runs. Work is a 6 mile, 10 K ride one way and it'll save me a ton of time on looking for parking. I'd like to ride during the winter as long as the roads are clear of snow and ice, any opinions of this? I know to dress warm even if for a short ride, with heavy gloves and an insulated jumpsuit for the body.
Are there any forum topics here you think I should look up that may lend to a newbie like myself?

Dress like you are riding a snowmobile and you will be fine...may want to invest in another battery... winter can be very hard on the tiny little black brick batteries...
Good luck!

How well does the kick start on this unit work in winter condition on a cold start? I tried it before I bought it and it worked on the 2nd. kick. Also can you push start these? Without a clutch I'm guessing not.

Kickstarters should really only be used in an emergency...they are very flimsy and the gears tend to bend Kymcos are better... Many people put large batteries in the seat tub for use in winter and carry a pair of jumper cables, but NEVER JUMP A SCOOTER FROM A RUNNING VEHICLE!! You probably will blow the electrical system...
