Actually that day, I did hit 50MPH, just not in this vid.
About a week ago, I hit ~52-53MPH GPS verified. Here's a vid of me doing 47:

What'd you do to it? (Obligatory: you're crazy filming on the highway like that without a gopro )

Cellphone was all I had. All mods where what I mentioned in the vid, spark plug gap, and BP Premium, Hi oct fuel. THat's all. Takes about 15 minutes to warm up the engine hot enough to get to these speeds.

Would be better without using the F word . Why on the shoulder instead of a lane ? Wearing headphones ? That is a serious bad idea as you may not here a car until it hits you

sorry but that is a funny ass video LOL. For one the hideous headphones my GOD. At least make it discreet and use earbuds LOL plus taking a 50cc on the highway... in the RAIN... on the shoulder... hmmmm it's not even in focus enough to see wtf the speedometer claims to say. ok that is all /end rant.

Its actually legal to ride on the highway on the shoulder in my state, but not in the lane or on federal interstates.

Well, I ended up on the highway by accident. Once on it, no way back. It was a ~100 mile ride for the nearest exit. A state trooper actually caught me about 30 minutes later, and asked me to go on the road; which I did. Lucky there was not a lot of traffic, and the weather became better. My speed also increased to below the blinker light (approx 52MPH GPS), thanks to a slight back wind.
As far as stock, yes, the bike is completely stock. The speeds, you can not read, because youtube blurred out the vid, but anyone who owns a TaoTao, can easily see the speedometer's position on the blinker, and find a picture of the tao's speedometer, and conclude I'm right on the speed. In fact, there are no numbers printed there, but if there where, it would read something like 105kmh/65MPH. I've ran many threads already saying that on the Tao ATM50, you just have to divide the km readout by 2, and that would be your true speed in MPH. I've ran a GPS on my bike, and this method 'till 48MPH it's on the dot correct. After that, it's about 1MPH over rated, meaning 65MPH/105kmh in actuality would be ~51.5MPH instead of 52.5MPH.
Fact is, I've now passed 55MPH GPS verified on my Tao; though it takes forever, and I barely ever take out my cell at those speeds to record. Some day I'll have to do something to prove the disbelievers.
If you can't believe it's a stock 50cc engine, then believe it's a secret 63cc. I don't care. I haven't had the time, nor the tools, to verify the engine's size anyway.
last week, I ended up next to another guy with a modern Tao, a mechanic. He got 42MPH out of his tao. I told him about the spark plug mod, and BP Premium fuel. He didn't know and would try.
Headphones: They where the only ones keeping me warm then! BTW, I prefer heads like that, don't like the little ones.
As far as the F# word, perhaps I should rate the vid 'R'-rated, so little kids won't hear all the bad words I was saying...
I was just F#'d up on the Effin highway, in effin rain on an effin 50cc scooter, in an effin t-shirt, when the temp dropped 20 degrees, freezing my @zz off.. If you don't want to hear the words, just turn off the sound, is distorted anyway, and turn off the cc's.
Funny now I see it again, not fun at all when being there, I remember!

I'm curious about what GPS system you are using, and if you've tried others to corroborate. Unless you are going downhill or have a mean wind at your back, this is a difficult one to accept.

Next time I'll try to make a vid. But since I don't really have a cam handy, I rely on my cellphone. And filming with the cell in one hand, and keeping the GPS in the other, leaves me not much to ride with. But I'm working on making a velcro system on my scoot, to stick the GPS on.
I just used an off the shelf $90 magellan, as well as a nuvi. Roadside speedometers kind of verify the speed too, although some are off.
Just about any GPS system should give you the same rating.

This is what my taotao does as well. I think I maxed out at 63 one time. The best mod I've put on was a windshield. I let it sit all last summer and have a problem now. It won't go over 35 it's really pissing me off. Put on a new carb, new fuel lines, upjetted to 95, and still sputtering. But this is a second taotao atm50 owner saying that factory stock "50" will hit those kinds of speeds. I kept on getting pulled over for speeding, and given warnings after warnings.

Well i have had two atm 50 brand new and neither did over 30 and if you combine both top speeds it wouldnt be 60 but im a 200 lb guy and maybe you guys are lighter, i dont doubt you guys just speaking on my experiences

They equipped the Tao with a large gear, and light rollers (though could be lighter). Engine 'shifts gear' or belt goes up on the variator ~5k RPM. From a dead cold engine, just start and go, it'll go 40+ GPS within 1 minute. Once the engine is hot, it'll go much faster. I've also noted way less engine vibration with the spark plug gap.. It could be because of a better seal, or perhaps the spark plug gap does something to earlier detonation. The day I hit 60 (thanks to the truck), the needle was completely horizontal to the right.

Hey pneathery! Hadnt seen you around in a long while. Your scoot was what made me get the universal windshield for mine and it does make a big difference. Mine has been to 42 on flat ground, but I have never had a straight road long enough to see if it could get any higher. Im sure I could probably hit 45 or so if I could find a place long enough to try it and thats with a 295lb man on it. Put a 100lb person on and i bet it would soar lol.

Most of the 2011 Tao Tao's have 44mm pistons in them. This makes them 60-61cc.

That would explain something if that was true. Concerning the windshield, put some duct tape on the bottom, and mount it as low as you can, touching the plastic above the headlight. It will force the windshield to bend (curve), so more wind will go sideways. I also bent it a bit backwards. There's more air going in my face this way, but it makes the windshield more aerodynamic. I squeeze the mirror nuts in such a way that it helps curve the relatively flat windshield too!
Also make sure you put some corrosion X, or worst case some silicone grease, or a drop of gear oil on the screws of the windshield. They rust very fast, and not superficial rust, but deep rust!
I also removed my trunk, and will be putting it on my EVO150, which is the bike for when I go with the wife.

I've heard others say that windshields increase top end. Do you guys advise a certain one?

I just got the plain universal one. Now, I dont know if its going to help everyone, but being a big guy, there is a lot of mass here that the air is hitting and causing resistance. Given the mass, the windshield definitely helped out. And prodigit, mine is sitting exactly as you describe, it forces the air right into my face lol. On hot summer days and if I use an open faced helmet, it actually feels pretty good.

Usually the $40 ones won't get you much more top end, at most 2MPH on a 50cc. All you got to look for, is a curved windshield. The straight and flat castle gates are just going to do the opposite.
That being said, I bought a straight $40 windshield, and curved it myself thanks to the mounting points. It kind of works, and feels a lot nicer to ride with less wind turbulence.

Hahaha I've done this before minus the rain. It was a 50 MPH speed limit highway-ish road and I actually didn't use the shoulder much, I was keeping up fine except up hills. Completely legal to ride 50cc's on any road in NC except limited-access highways (on/off ramps not intersections). My ATM50-A1 was stock internals but secret 63 with airflow mods and octane booster. GPS verified 55 MPH on a slight downhill once before it sounded like the engine was going to explode. Even my 83cc BBK now doesn't want to do that b/c of gearing

Oh and I didn't have a windshield, which in my testing easily adds another 2-3 mph.
