This is the pressed-on gear behind the variator.....it must be removed to replace the crankshaft or to replace the crank seal (what I'm attempting to do here). It's on there extremely tight. A cheap 2 or 3-jaw puller wouldn't do it......neither will wrapping the jaws with tape, using a clamp to hold the jaws together, or a torch. I tried everything.
Next step.....acquire a 2 1/4" small bearing separator. I got mine from this Ebay seller. Then you'll need a heavy puller set......I got mine from Harbor Freight in a set (#30305). They do have a puller set that includes everything, even the small separator. I don't know if that separator will fit in there.....the E-Bay one I got fits fine, but you do have to remove the kick-starter assy.
I needed two large breaker bars to do the job. When the gear finally broke loose, I thought the crank broke in two.
Here's the seal I need to replace......19.8x30x5mm.
I made a little pry-bar to pop the seal out...it's a small screwdriver cut down on a grinder. The seal comes right out....just don't scratch the crank.
Here's the puller set I had to buy....none of the gear puller sets I had would work with the small separator.
This particular engine in the photos is a junk engine I found......using it for practice. My own scoot engine is next.....the leak is slight, but annoying. If you're real lucky, your own gear might just pop off......but I doubt it.
Questions...?
China Motor Parts has that seal listed for my Xingyue. Scrappy sells a seal set that includes a bunch of seals....but I don't know if it contains the right seal for this GY6B engine. Might be better to buy the set (contains two crank seals)....sometimes they get screwed up upon installation. I'm going to see if I can find one locally.
Update.....the oil seal set from Scrappy does include the two crank seals, which are apparently the same size on the air-cooled GY6 engines. The two transmission seals in his kit fit a standard GY6 engine, but not the GY6B engine (16" wheel scoots).
