whats up yall,i'm new to this forum.i had just bought a 150 cc scooter that i bought new,nolt used yestersay from this bike store.it was running and riding good yesterday and earlier today.i was riding around the neighborhood and all of a sudden i pull up at a stop sign and it shuts off,so i had to walk it back to my house,then i try to get it operating again ,it it starts and turn over,then i turn the throttle it shuts back off.i mean crank up scooter motor,and if i would let it stay running while the scooter sits still until i turn the throttle and like i said the motor shuts off.
what is causing that problem?i just bought the scooter new yestersay and didn't think i would be having a problem this fast.

Congrats on the new scoot...We need to know make and model. Can already see its a 150. Do you have picks yet?
Where did you get it? Got mine at a dealer in Dallas, has been quite dependable, no major issues.

the scooter says"Adventure" on it as far as the name of the brand,and i think the year of the scooter is 2011

Was the engine warm or cold ? How many miles on it ? Scooters are cold natured and require you to warmup the engine prior to riding more so in winter. Does it sputter or stall or simply dies on takeoff ? Does it stall just before you come to a stop ? Being new I would not think the carb jets are clogged yet but its a common bug most ujet the idle and main jet a size or more bigger . Being new it should not smoke other than a white mist at first if humid and is only water that condensed in the pipe . Try letting it idle till the exhaust gases feel at least warm to your hand , you dont need to let it get hot . Whats crazy to me is the exhaust gases are cooler than outside air when first starting up . Riding a cold engine could get the valves out of adjustment and the piston has not swelled up yet so may not have as much compression as when its warm . When you stalled at takeoff was you easy on the throttle or at WOT ? I know some TaoTaos are known to have the fuel filter on backwards so its worth it to check yours as well . Hard to start or stalling can also mean a simple valve adjustment is needed . Mine got out of wack and would stall just before I came to a stop but instantly restart . Adjustment and was new again and was around 2,200 miles or so for me . All 4T scooters will need this service around then along with going over the nuts and bolts since they get loose . Check your sparkplug if its a Torch brand replace with NGK ( the best brand ) around 3 dollars or even better with NGK iridium around 10 it will fire better and keep the engine running at its best . Run premium gas and avoid ethanoled gas if you can get gas w/o it in it . Ethanol dissolves rubber fuel parts and only has a 90 day shelf life where gas w/o is over a year according to epa.gov .

skuttadawg:its is cold down here where i'm at,maybe likie you said i should let the thing idie before i take off,whats does WOT mean? and kno i havent been easy on the trottle,i been turning the throttle hard on take off.it doesn't sputter at all,it just dies when i turn the throttle.
when taking off are you suppose to be easy on the throttle?aslo i had put some cheap gas from an off name gas station,could that be a problem too?

And welcome, I think your running lean, when air gets cold it gets denser and requires more fuel...
Your main jet could be plugged as well, I would start by cleaning the carb, adjusting the A/F If your carb has one...

wide open throttle . I was wondering if you tried taking off with it at WOT or not . Try letting it warm up some simply put your hand by the exhaust and wait till its warm and see how it runs . Small engines run bad when cold and improve when warmed up wide open throttle means when you shoot to the max mph? |

When you first start it up note the temp of exhaust by hand as weirdly its cold . I found this so odd being the gases are from a tiny explosion in the engine . I always warm mine up and take better care of my scooter than most even though I stretch the rubber band at times but mostly cruise around . I have gotten gas that had some water in it before and had to drain it and replace with brand name gas . I put in 87 one time in a scooter and the piston cracked before I ran it out so I only use premium where each grade of gas has its own hose to avoid getting any 87 left in the line by previous customer . A carb is not as responsive as EFI and a cold engine can stall if you try a WOT takeoff instead of being easy on it .
The valves on any 4T will need adjustment after 2,000 miles or a few months to keep it running right . When valves are out of adjustment you can have a hard time starting , running or stalling when coming to a stop .
Let it warm up real good and see how it does along with posting the results so others can learn if it clears up .
Scooters are a great deal of fun but they need to be taken care of and not abused . A scooter does not have the power like motorcycle and alot of newbies think something is wrong when its not and that simply is just how they are . If its real cold and you want to warm it up faster give it only just enough gas to spin the wheel while on center stand and NEVER rev up the engine while cold . Aluminum takes longer to warm than iron but also cools faster . I had a Geo Metro with all aluminum 3 cyl it had to warm up in winter or run terrible till it warmed up

i was just outside letting the scooter warm up for a while and when i turn the throttle it still shut off,but i'm about to go back outside right now,crank it back up and see if thhe exaut is hot or cold.

WOT is like flooring the gas pedal in a car . No need to take seat loose simply put hand in front of muffler and feel the temp of the gases . The choke or enricher might be wack

It can if the A/F mix isn't right. You can't always hear a problem like pinging, yet it is still damaging the engine.

problem solved! the carb just needed cleaned,now my scootor is riding again.i guess during the assembly(before i took it home) they forgot to clean it.

i scooter has the same problem again!i had just drove my scooter on my way to work yesterday and it stopped on me again,i got stranded and had to call a tow truck to take it back to my house.the engine starts,but doesn't turn over.the exact same problem i had the first time.i believe it's the carb again?mabe the carb needs to be replace,a don't know,bui this is a brang new f--king scoote with only 119 miles on it and already have problems twice.i have a 90 day warrenty engine and transmission parts only....so if its the carburetor that needs to be replace the mechanic from the store which has a repair shop will do that under my warrenty.
by the way this scooter was made in china,don't know if that has anything to do with it.any thing you by new shouldn't be having problems this fast,i had this scooter for 2 weeks.i asked the guy is the carburetor rebuilt and he said "no,it's new" and that don't rebuilt parts to a scootor.i'm nervous because if theirs a problem already with the carb that fast,then there's no tellin whatelse on the scooter will go wrong.i hope i didn't buy a lemon.

Adjust the valves. There are many how-to's floating around, as well as videos on youtube. It's fairly easy to do. You adjust the valves with the engine cold.
It's not a lemon. Chinese made scooters take a bit to get tuned up when they are new. Possibly the scooter shop you bought it from wasn't aware of the adjustments that need to be made.
First, adjust the valves, .004" intake and .005" exhaust.
Second, replace the spark plug with a new NGK.
Third, replace the oil (yes, already) and gear oil.
Fourth, adjust the valves again.
Fifth, add Seafoam or fuel injector cleaner to the gas tank at each fillup.
Sixth, replace the oil again at 300 miles.
Seventh, adjust the valves again.
You should have a well running scooter after that.

And I would consider changing the fuel filter, if its the paper kind it may be the reason your carb jets are plugging up.. And you may want to consider changing the fuel and vac lines with higher quality ones...

if its under warranty i wouldnt do anything except let the dealer deal with it. anything you do might void that warranty.

Since it is a new scoot, it is likely EFI (Electronic Fuel Injection) which means there are sensors for measuring ambient temperature, mass airflow sensor (measures volume of air flowing through the airhorn), as well as electronic fuel injectors (which vary the "spritz" of fuel entering by electrical duty cycle pulse) as well as enrichener passage (which may be controlled by an electrical "thermal choke" arrangement. All of these have to be in sync by the main processor...so the modern scooter is NOT as simple as the carburetor fueling of old.  |

im dont think many new scoots have efi. none of the half dozen or so locals who got a new one recently have it. thank god because most of the problems here relate to dead battery which is NOT GOOD if you got efi.

I have just fixed this problem in my Heinkel. You might think that our scooters have little in common. But check to see if your carburetor float needle is letting fuel by. This problem makes for an excellent idle, even in the cold, but when the throttle is turned, the carburetor is flooded. The scooter stalls. It starts soon after, and blows out white smoke. It is easy to check.

Yes, there is a bit of dirt that can settle to the bottom of the fuel tank. It can get past the filter screen and possibly get past the fuel filter.

Sounds stupid, but try running your scooter with no gas cap, i just filled up and made the mistake of filing the tank too much and the cap wasnt ventilating. The gas cap is designed to breath if its blocked up the tank becomes a vacuum and all fuel gets stuck in the lines until that cap is released.

Yes, some of the Tao Taos were shipped that way.
TECHNICALLY, there should be no difference in flow through the fuel filter. They are designed so the crap gets filtered on the outside of the filter, so it is visible from the outside when it is dirty.
HOWEVER, many people have reported that by turning around the fuel filter it solved their stalling issues. Possibly the design of the cheap filters is such that you get turbulence through the filter that can slow down the flow. I don't know, I'm just relaying what other people have reported. I never have had any issues with the fuel filter when it was installed backwards.
Sure, try to redeem the warranty. Only you want to make sure that the shop actually fixes the problem and doesn't mess things up more, or take too long and keep you from enjoying your scooter for weeks or even months. If it's simple, no reason not to take a look and try to come up with your own solution.
