I'm a new guy to the scootdawg forum, but have been really wanting to get a scooter for a few years now. I finally got my scoot... but not the easy way.
I took the risk and went the CRAIGSLIST route. I found a 150cc LB150T-12 on there and emailed the woman selling about it. She was asking $700 and seemed desperate to get rid of it.
I met her and she seemed very nice and told me the reason she was selling it was because it belonged to her late husband, who just passed a few months earlier. She needed to sell it because she needed the money to pay the bills.
I know what you're thinking.
Sad sap story where the seller is just trying to win over the buyer's sympathy. Well... It worked. I really did believe her, and come to find out she actually was telling the truth.
My wife had given me a stipend of $400 to spend on the thing so I took my money and went with the "wave the cash and prepare to walk" method. To my surprise she took the deal, way under what she asked. I was super excited to get it back. It ran great, was kept inside a garage and occasionally ran. All the plastics looked great, engine was clean as a whistle, the whole 9 yards.
The fishy thing was that she didn't have the OK Tag on the scoot. At the time, this seemed insignificant to me. I looked at the title, made sure it was legit, we went and got it notarized... deal: done.
THE NEXT DAY
I walk into the tag agency and ask for a transfer of title. The woman behind the counter takes my paperwork over to one of those ancient MS-DOS computers and shakes her head.
Crap. Head shakes are not good.
She comes back and informs me that the tag has not been renewed in 3 years and I am hereby responsible as the buyer to account for the unpaid years of tag taxes as well as the penalties incurred.
All $420 of them...
This story just goes to show... DO YOUR HOMEWORK BEFORE YOU BUY!!!
Before you buy from CraigsList, get the VIN number and call your local tag agency. Have them run the VIN and see what kind of taxes, fees and other costs you will incur before you make "The Deal." Don't be foolish like me!
Hope you all enjoy my sucky story of how I acquired my first scoot.
