I have moved to this new thread to avoid messing up the "break-in techniques for (under400)" with my personal problem. To recap: My new scoot: Qlink Pegasus. Mileage: about 60. What happened: Saturday night: changed motor oil to Valvoline 10/40. Sunday afternoon, hot weather at high 80's F, took off on break-in run. Planned to take country roads only, with chance for hard acceleration and deceleration without traffic interference. After 15 minutes of perfect conditions for procedure I was forced to enter the freeway unintentionally because of combined state and I.5. stretch. Had to run hard for about 2-3 minutes at close to top speed for fear of impeding traffic, when I suddenly lost power and slowed to below 30. I ran slowly on shoulder to next exit, stopped, noticed temperature close to (but not "in") red zone. Stopped engine, left on fan to cool down, made sure coolant level was adequate. When temperature turned normal I switched off engine and let her sit for a few minutes. Tried to restart several times unsuccesfully, and had to piggy-back scooter home by friendly neighbor's pick-up truck: Right now my Peg is sitting in my garage, several plastic panels successfully ripped off (without breaking any so far) to get to the guts of the thing and check for spark on plug (for which I still need to find a socket that fits!).

When you say it wouldn't start, was it cranking and not starting, or not cranking at all?
If it was cranking, was it sounding normal, or was it dragging?
It honestly doesn't sound like it was being run hard enough to have seized it, especially with the heat gage not in the red like that.
Also, you can get a compression tester at any auto parts store.
You might look up what plug your Pegasus takes, see if the parts store stocks it and if they do, use it to find a socket that fits.
Have you considered contacting the dealer you got it from?

The starter sounds fine, just the same as it did before the problem. I have no way of looking up what plug the Peg takes, since all the online manual says is NGK plug. I can read an "R" under the NGK on the ceramic part of the plug, which is all one can see. I have not spoken to the dealer yet, since he is closed on Mondays.

Answered your pm, and "break-in thread" is stagnant. Right now I am still waiting to find out the size of my NGK/R plug, so I can make sure that I have ignition before I talk to the shop. tp555 says it could be 5/8 or 18mm, as you suggested as well. Since the 11/16 I got from the store last night is just a tad too small it eliminates the 5/8. That would leave the 18mm, which I have not been able to find yet.

Your plug is an 18mm size and here's the info on it--- www.ngk.com/more_info.asp?AAIA=&pid=3647I'd suggest you upgrade to an Iridium plug too. It sounds like something came loose at the higher speed. Check tightness of wiring connections especially the plug wire and coil connections. Check all hoses to be sure nothing came unplugged and make sure you're getting fuel:) Good luck and we're all here to help ya

That seems to be the one! I still wouldn't have been able to tell if you didn't point me to that page. I also finally succeeded in finding an 18mm plug socket at the store, and got the plug out for testing. No spark! Plug color looks like it was running pretty hot. Well, this explains the starting problem, which leaves the loss of power. I also stopped at the dealer and explained the symptoms. He wants me to bring in the scooter to check it out. Will need to get my friendly neighbor to haul it for me again.

At 2-3 minutes I can't see you cook the engine. Something else is going on here. Seems to me it may be a good thing that you did run it like that. Something was not right and waiting to go. In engineering terms we call that HALT (highly accelerated life testing), which in your case was not highly at all. Sometimes a latent problem needs treatment like that to bring it to the fore. You even cooled it down properly. It could even be a case of a faulty CDI. All vehicles I buy I give a good workout shortly after I buy them, that way any latent problems manifest themselves and can get fixed under warranty. After that I drive them until they are about ready for the scrap yard after a few 100 000kms. Don't let people tell you you abused it, it is not the case. Don't give the dealer the impression that you abused it, because you did not. Don't give yourself the impression that you abused it, because you did not. Some people may have said that you abused it, but that would be the same people that baby their scoots & cars, never work on them themselves, don't know a spark-plug from a CDI and change their cars/scoots after two years because they don't want problems. Don't be hard on yourself. I know the feeling when you have something nice/good, do something and after think "Dang, I wrecked a pretty good thing" But when you think back you realize, you did you homework, made a informed decision, did it and something came out of it. May not be what you hoped, but in the end you'll be glad it did. You'll have the confidence in the scoot to wander 100's of miles away from home without the worries of will it get you back. I know something positive will come out of it Al. ;D ;D

Thank you for the kind words, Kiwi! Interestingly, although I am not a mechanic in any sense of the word, I had suspected the CDI unit from the beginning - or at least hoped that's what was at fault. Now, seeing that I have no spark at the plug it seems even more likely. The dealer's parting words were: "...at least it's all under warranty!". So at least I should get away without financial punishment!

He also wants to buy a few Pegs now for a special sale. Proves again - "what goes around comes around" or however the saying goes!

Glad to hear you're not getting spark, which is a way of saying glad the engine isn't baked.
If it is still cranking freely like it was before, then you can be pretty sure it's not seized up.
Like Kiwi said, you didn't do anything that would deserve this kind of failure. You just "stress tested" the equipment and found a prematurely failing component that needed to be replaced anyway.
I'm in the process of breaking a new one in now, currently just 7 miles on it. Still waiting on the MCO so I can tag it.
Let us know what you find out at the dealer.

Sorry to respond so late. The same thing happened to my Pegasus only 9 days into ownership (two years ago and now only a month left on the warranty). Deja vu, a kind stranger in a pickup WITH a Tommy Lift stopped and loaded it up and took us home. At first, the starter would turn but no spark. Then finally not even the starter would turn although the battery was good. I checked everything, even tried a different CDI, plug, wire, switch. Turns out it was a bad pickup coil. The dealer replaced it (after taking 4.5 weeks) and I have never had a problem with the engine since. Takes about 15 minutes to replace and I believe the piece costs about $10.00. Now I have to find out why I keep blowing the headlight fuse.

I believe mondo is riding a air cooled 150 which would account for no temp gauge.
