Contrary to the Intertubes rumors, the Lance Milan does not have plastic front springs, but the front "shock" unit is still lousy.
The front shock has plastic covers and a very real steel spring inside the larger diameter portion of the cover. Unfortunately, the smaller diameter plastic body actually is the shock body. I drilled a small hoe in it and it looks like there might be a very small damper in that part.
It's fully functional with the hole, some duct tape will keep dirt and water out.
Shock dimensions, if anyone finds a 260mm long replacement, please let us know. I'm looking for a decent quality performance shock, not another Lance part. They are about the size of some mini-bike rear shocks.
Front suspension with chrome plastic removed.
The trailing link suspension looks like it could be better than the scooter version of motorcycle forks if we find good shocks to go with it.
Note that the lower shock mount is a sealed bushng that should be greased occasionally. 3,000 mile interrvals are probably adequate. Also once at 0 miles unless you trust the factory. Mine has 2400 miles on it and the bushing still has lube. YMMV
Edit: The bushing where the trailing link connects to the fork looks like the same type of bushing. i will check it out when I tear the entire front end down and lube and adjust the steering head bearings in a couple of months.
This would make a good looking front end on a bobber or chopper.
If you have a Lance Milan or other scoot with the same trailing link front suspension, check your nuts. See which ones in the above picture. The indicated nut that holds the trailing link onto the fork was finger loose on bith sides of my scoot.
Just one more reason to check critical fasteners yourself instead of relying on a Chinese production line or a US B&M dealer.
One of those bolts coming out would ruin your whole day or worse.
Update:Update: Tried torquing the loose nut on the other end of the stud with the red arrow at the top left of the picture and it locked up the front suspension.
Would a fellow Lance or equivalent owner take look at theirs and let me know what it has for a nut? It's the forward most nut on the front suspension trailing link. You can reach behind the plastic with a 14mm box wrench to check tightness.
Thanks
