 100mph crash......he was 19.
« Thread Started on Aug 24, 2010, 3:47pm »

Don't know if the guy lived, but I don't see how he could. Link. This is exactly why I won't ride my scoot on the interstates any longer. Can anybody tell me why he was going that fast at 7AM in traffic, or ever?

Speed kills......heard that all my life, and it's still true, even with seat belts, air bags, crumple zones, or helmets. Slow down. :'(

AGe says it all. I lived only a few miles from there when I was a kid before 675 was put in.

It is not the speed that kills, It is the sudden stop when you run into something.

That is just stupid driving that fast. If you notice where the car hit the bridge support, it took a good chunk off of it. If that guy has insurance, his company will pay through the nose for that. Near where I live a truck with a load that was higher than a overpass on I-5 hit it and damaged it. It cost that company millions in repair costs to fix that overpass. There was a blurb at the bottom of the link, the guy was alive but critical.

The reason he was going that fast is because he was 19 years old. I will drive on the interstate, but only when I have to. Just moved to Jacksonville, FL where they drive like bumper cars at the carnival. 55 pmh down here means 70+, with lots of lane weaving. Few bikers with helmets as well. It's a recipe for disaster. Found a non-highway path to my place of empoloyment.

Bluefront,
Ya I will not ride my scooter on the Interstate neither. Too risky and trucks will blow me off the road. They move 80 mph on some parts and a little 250cc scooter has no hope in keeping up with the flow of traffic. See, a 250cc scooter may be able to travel 75 mph down hill but coming up the hill might only get up to 55 to 60 mph.. Cars and trucks don't want to slowdown for us. So it is best not to take a chance on riding the interstate.

well the car taking the video was breaking the law , the left lane is for passing only , he was not passing . Had he obeyed the law and was not just crusing in the left lane , the 19 year old would not have crashed in that spot !!!

I often drive above the posted limit , that is on me , yes it is in voilation of the law . However I still only use the left lane for passing . People need to leave the left lane opened for passing , most of the time people cruise in the left lane not passing and lock the roadway . That is very frustrating for me on the roads . Seems people feel it it all about them .

During rush-hour conditions, all the lanes around here are filled with cars.......there's no saving the "passing-lane" for faster cars. And...there's no set limit for that outer lane as to how fast you must be passing at any time.

I don't blame the guy with the camera.....it was that idiot kid's fault, pretending he was driving on a race-track.

I think the driving age should be raised to 21.....it would be a bunch safer for the people who use their heads. ::)

How could the car taking the video be bearking the law if he was giong the posted posted speed limit? Of course we don't know how fast anyone was going? The person taking the video may have been going over the posted speed limit. Just because someone wants to go over the speed limit does not does not make the person in the left lane illegal and if you have ever driven on a expressway you know this happens all the time. Very few people drive the posted speed limit and I am no better then the next person. Drive with the flow what ever lane you are in. As far as the 19 year goes it looks like he was going way faster then the flow. He was looking at too many u-tube moives.

I think the car that crashed wasn't even in a lane. The "left hand lane" as some on here referred to it is the shoulder of the road. Notice there's a yellow line between the car with the camera and the car that crashed. The car with the camera is in the left hand lane. The other car simply lost control. I have had to travel on I75 in downstate Michigan and people were passing me at a high rate. I was doing 80! No, I won't ride my scooter on an expressway. It's just not safe.

well I can say in the New york state DMV booklet , it states that the left hand lane is for passing, in that video the traffic was very light , the point is the car with the camera was in the left lane . My piont was it sure looked like he was cruising the left lane and not passing .
19 years old or not he was passing I bet he was in the left lane , the guy with the camera saw him comming and stayed there on spite . The 19 year old was young and dum , but perhaps if the guy with the camera was following the law in New York State and NOT RIDING THE LEFT LANE the 19 year old would not have died in that spot .

Has he died? Under the video it says he's in critical condition. He was going too fast! He lost control because he was going too fast. What was he doing passing, on the shoulder of the road by the way, since he was already GOING TOO FAST! Even if he had been able to pass in the proper left hand lanse he still would have been...GOING TOO FAST! Speed was the cause of the accident, plain and simple. He was, let's say it together...GOING TOO FAST!!!

It looks like no one should have been in in left lane when that nut was comeing. There we go why not just make the left lane open to people that want to run as fast as there car will go. We don't need speed limits. Isn't it that way in Germany.

sounds great to me , most in the states have no idea what a left turn signal on in the left lane is for . It would have been a sight to see if instead of tring to pass on the shoulder , he chose rearend the left lane hog . Now thats a video I would like to see . stupity should be painfull !!!!!

young and dumb....thats all i can say......100MPH on the side of the road. watch the video carefully, looks like he fell asleep behind the wheel, he came from behind the cruiser going left, now watch he didnt step on the brakes untill he hit the center divider and lifted about 4 feet above the ground. if you loose control and youre awake, the first thing you will do step on your brake, looks like this boy didnt even know he went on the side of the road and just awaken at the first hit on the divider. watch the video again and let me know what you think.

Ok, so you even it out and assume the cameraperson was in the left lane too long and to cruise and not pass. Legal or not, this is commonplace. The rider was speeding. Really, REALLY speeding.
They both broke the law. For argument's sake.

Now that legal is out of the way, let's bring stupidity into the picture and I'm sure any reasonable person knows where the fault lies, and who was far and away more dangerous to have on the road.

Legality and safety are two different items. To come up on someone THAT fast on a road full of traffic already moving at highway speeds is in a whole different realm of carelessness. You seem to want to fault the person in the left lane to an even greater degree than the speeder which is a bit mind-boggling, but I can't see anyone opting to share a road with the speeder.

It was a Police Cruiser who took the video from the dash cam. Said so in the video description.

It's kind of obvious that kid was speeding much beyond what he could control. He saw the Police Cruiser and panicked and ended up going into the median, launching off the crash barrier hitting the bridge support beam and getting ejected from the car. Simple.

i think it is unreal to say that it was speed that cause this it was a stupid person behind the wheel it is not safe to drive at that speed on a public road it is not the speed fault for this it is the stupid driver that thought he was better than he was and no Germany does have a recommend speed on all of thier roads i live over there for some time while in the service it is highly patoled and if you are just riding in the left lane you will be pull over and givin a ticket for it they also charge a high fee for the privilge to driver over there of 2000$ and you have to complete a full driving course before you get a lincence i think all drivers here should be required to take a full driving course before getting behind the wheel

It could have been as simple as a broken return spring on the throttle body. It happened to me one night on my way to work, driving 45-50 MPH down the road, spring broke it went WOT, next thing i knew I was doing 70+ before I could react with the break and turn off ignition to pull over to the side of the road and check what happened...Broken return spring, scared the poo outta me. OR, could have fallen asleep or the NO FEAR syndrome, only he knows for now. Same thing happened to a young woman in S. Carolina when her VW went WOT after fueling up, she couldn't turn the ignition off because of a problem with the trans, called 911 for help and police tried to help her but couldn't slow her down so they cleared as much of the interstate as they could, after 2 hours of clearing the road for her through 2 states hitting speeds of 100+ she finally lost it, flipped cleared 15' shrubs in the middle of the interstate landing in oncoming traffic finally coming to a stop. No one was really injured amazingly, she went to the hospital and was released later that day. Car was totaled, some people have higher powers with them.

Seeing it was a police cruiser does this make it a different story, was he in the wrong by driving in the left lane or is he above this left lane law?

As far as I can tell the kid is alive.
He survived and made it to the hospital in critical condition.
So nobody else got hurt and he's apparently and hopefully alive.
At least he's highly unlikely to overlook at least basic safety from this point on, if he's ever in a shape to drive again.

What sucks is some people need to be involved in something like this before they learn and considering the speed and impact, this is as good a scenario as an accident could have produced.
I did plenty of dumb things myself as a kid. I wonder if it's even possible to prevent this sort of thing.

here in CA we drive in all lanes, so in FL you can't drive in the left lane unless you are going over the speed limit to pass? thats what it seems like everyone is saying. if so, thats a stupid law because who is going to leave a whole lane open... speed limit is the speed limit in any state. all in all a 19 yr old kid was reckless and couldn't handle his car

This is going to keep happening as long as the law lets a 19 year old drive a big/fast car. Normal scenario.....the parents buy the kid a car. Since he didn't pay for it himself, he doesn't appreciate the thing, and at age 19, he has no idea about consequences of stupid/dangerous driving. After all......he's crashed numerous cars in video games, and it was fun.

I'd change the law......no drivers license until age 21, or until you have a high school diploma, and two years of college. (with passing grades)
