Hi guys,
just wanted to jump on here and introduce myself. I didn't know that there was such a huge support network for people who own these chinese scoots... but it's nice to see such an active community.
I purchased a Jonway 150 about a month ago, and love it!
First thing I did when I received it was drain out the motor oil and gear oil. They were very strange looking... a blue iridescent color, and the motor oil had several large flakes of metal in it -- not the best thing to have floating around in your crank case
I took the advise of many people and quickly changed out the fuel lines and fuel filter... I also bypassed the vacuum petcock, but have to still install a manual petcock in the line.
I also liked the idea of adding an air scoop to the cooling fan because I drive it around here in the heat of Phoenix. Many people have made them from PVC elbows, but I found that the lip on an ABS toilet flange gives you enough room to drill and use the existing screw holes on the plastic shroud. I cut the angle a little more with my chop saw, sanded it down, and painted it with a flat black before installing.
I removed the access panel below the seat and put expanded metal there because I'm planning on adding an oil cooler and fan behind this... I figured it's a nice place to put something, and the expanded metal will add to the air flow available to the oil cooler.
And last, but not least, I also removed the front storage compartment door and covered the opening with expanded metal. I hated the storage compartment (very flimsy door and lock, and hardly any room anyway), so I opted to make it a little more "manly" by putting on the expanded metal. Right now it has two switches -- the one on the left is a ON/OFF switch for my headlights... I wanted to be able to turn them off if I wanted, and the switch on the right is a toggle switch that currently doesn't run anything, but it's tapped into the ignition switch, and it's "plumbed" back to the smaller access panel below the seat to run the fan for the oil cooler once it's all installed. The expanded metal will also act as the mounting bracket for once I get the volt/temp gauges I'm planning for...
And just tonight, I switched out the sparkplug. My scoot actually came with a NGK plug, but it was the one without a resistor in it... I opted to switch it out for the NGK CR7HSA plug. supposedly the resistor (the R in the CR7HSA) helps to reduce the interference it produces that could impact the electronic ignition.
So far i love how easy this thing is to work on, and my future plans include --
--Volt/Temp gauges
--A glasspack mod for the muffler
--Oil cooler and fan
Let me know what you think so far --- i'm looking forward to meeting some fellow Crazy's.
