We have a 1000kms in 24 hours challenge ride here. I did 300km with a friend who rode it last weekend. Well that got me thinking, the scoot just had it's 24000 km service and why not do my own 1000km run this Friday. Now I wondered if anybody has any tips. We don't have high temperatures, average speed will be about 80km/h even going at 100km true speed because of our twisty roads, stops and because the roads tend to go thru every little town. Hydration should not be a problem as I envisage stops every 120kms with the second stop for fuel and our temperatures are only about 15-20degC at the moment. We have long hours sunshine, so I will leave at 6 am and think I should be back at 6 pm with still 2.5 hours of sunlight left. Tools: 1.) open ended spanner set 2.) sparkplug spanner 3.) screwdrivers 4.) small socket set 5.) 17mm socket for variator nut + torque wrench + variator tool 6.) puncture repair + inflation kit
Spares: 1.) sparkplug 2.) belt 3.) 5 liter extra fuel
Medicine: 1.) asthma inhaler 2.) eye drops 3.) lip balm 4.) Voltaren pain relief muscle relaxant
That's all I can think of at the moment. what else do you think? kiwiscoot

Click here for my routeBasically from the east coast, via two passes (Porters & Arthurs Passes 900m/3000ft) through the Otira Gorge to the west coast, then through the spectacular Buller Gorge (one of the best rides) up the coast to the northern coast and then back to the east coast. Forecast is mostly fine, but the weather is normally totally different on each side of the island. Temperatures will be from about 10 degC to 25 degC and there will be some wind on both coast runs. The planning continues.....

So you're figuring 12 hrs to go that distance? I'll bet it'll be more like 16/18 hours, provided you don't have any mechanical problems, and don't stop/rest very often. I got in a bad rainstorm one time which shorted out a coil wire on the bike I was riding.....fortunately one of the guys in the group always carried a roll of spare wire. With my Xingyue I always carry a spare coil/plug wire and cap, a spare CDI unit, and several spark plugs. Find some sort of soft seat cushion......unless you have an iron butt, you'll be happy you did. Here's one I'm using.

OK, I finally figured out you are probably in New Zealand. Now your weather makes sense to me. 80 km/h times 6 tenths equals about 50 MPH. That is much too optimistic unless you are intending to ride really, really fast at all times and have a really long fuel range at that speed. Think along the lines of averaging 35 - 40 MPH.
The reason I say this is from my experience traveling in my car on US Interstate highways where if you only set your cruise control at 70 MPH you are going to be among the slow things on the highway and you can empty your gas tank with no need to stop. Throw in short rest stops, quick fuel stops, and fast meal breaks and you are doing well to average 60 MPH. It's really hard do it without cruise control.
You also might want to check your speedometer and odometer, you may be in for a surprise. My scooter speedometer reads 20% fast and the odometer reads 10% long.

Bluefront - I've done 700kms per day and still felt good as the Citycoms seat is really good, but a further 300km may just kill the butt. I'll follow your advice me think.
nulldevice - my speedo is 10% optimistic, so I'll keep a 110kph on the clock for a speed of 100kph (60mph) - odo is about 1% optimistic. I'll keep an eye on the GPS as it will give my true speed and an real-time average speed, which will help to plan. Fuel range is 250km at that speed, but may be shorter into a stiff head-wind. That is why I take 5 liters of spare fuel.

Having driven through that part of NZ, I don't know how you can do this...I found myself stopping every few km. to check out the awesome views. I did manage to travel the Abel Tasman coast in 3 days, but that was in a kayak... Good on ya Kiwi, I know the Citycom can handle it.

As a truck driver I always estimated my time at 100 miles every 2hrs. My truck topped out at 65 but it almost always averaged out on a long trip to 50mph(stops etc)
Those pictures look awsome, will be a beautiful ride, have fun and be safe!

Nice bunch of photos.....if you did the whole ride in 15 hours and still had time to stop for the photography, that is impressive.
I did a ride once through the USA Smokey Mountains......seemed like I was stopping every two minutes to get out my Nikon. ;D

I have always wanted to come down to New Zealand! I fell in love with the beauty of it after first watching the Lord of the Rings movies, just stunning!! That was a great ride and I hope to one day come down there and do some riding myself.

I did a ride once through the USA Smokey Mountains......seemed like I was stopping every two minutes to get out my Nikon. ;D I left at 6am and was back home again at 9pm. The stops had to be quick. I had a video camera on my scoot and at one place where I stopped to take a photo it was running. Comical to watch me running to take the photo and frantically stuff the camera back in my pocket. I know the feeling, there was a 1001 places on the way where I felt I should turn back and take a photo of the stunning scenery. I't great to be alive!
