 139QMB Slow Build
« Thread Started on Apr 21, 2012, 5:50pm »

Hey guys, I'm getting started on the free scooter i got and i have a few questions.

I got the scooter running and rode to the parts store to get a new NGK plug. I got home and installed the plug and it started up again just fine.
I figured it could use some new gas since it had been sitting for 10 months so i rode to the gas station and put some 91 in it.
I go to kick it after filling up (the battery is shot) and notice I'm dripping gas.
I didn't think much of it and i kicked it a few more times. Then the gas started pouring out.. i push my self away from the pumps and after 10 or 15 more unsuccessful kick i ended up walking it home.

Once i was home i pulled off the seat and air box and i was literally pouring fuel out of the intake. and from this weird cylinder.

The scoot is in rough shape with a few lines missing so i'm not sure what this thing is for.

So my questions are:
What could have happend between my house and the gas station? and what is this thing?

I'm not sure how to post my pictures, it says they're too big... I'll have to get that figured out.

My plug was wet too so that would make sense, I'll give that a shot, thanks!

And I'd still like to know what that black thing is if anyone knows

The cylinder is part of the emissions system. It's the evap container used to trap gas fumes from the fuel tank. My guess is that it's clogged/full and you overfilled the fuel tank. Also, the float got stuck open in the carb or the petcock in the fuel tank is stuck open and gas poured down the vacuum line.

got it figured out, the float was sticky.

The next issues is the electric start. I've got a full charge and when i go to start is, the starter just clicks once. It sounds like it's engaging but it wont go any farther.

The brake lever needs to be pulled for it to click but noting i do will make it crank, am i missing a safetly?

Sounds like a bad solenoid. Jump the posts on it. If the starter turns then the solenoid is bad.

Got the problem temporarily fixed, i had a starter button laying around so i wired that up to jump the solenoid. I know it's not a good way to do it...
It will work until i get the new solenoid.

This summer i think i'll be getting this kit from Mainely Scooters:
http://eshop.mainelyscooters.com/product/cat-139qmb/hoca-qmb139-4t-power-pack/

Unless everyone has legitimate reasons not to, I'm just gonna get every thing done at once!

hoca is usually good quality stuff. i dont know what jets come in the carb, but youll probably need a couple different sizes to get it right. slider weights, a kevlar belt to deal with the new power, uni filter and exhaust would be good too. might wanna get a cvt gasket. and dont slap it in all at once. move slow so you dont freak out when the damn thing doesnt run at first.

So put a few parts in, run it for a bit.. and the repeat. That works, and it's not a daily rider by any means so I'll be ok if it isn't running for a bit.

i find that it works best to go slow. i put on a bunch of stuff all at once and promptly blew a piston.

This might just end up being a conversation between us two because i make more questions as fast as i get questions answered, but if you don't mind answering i'll find things to ask.

What is the difference between the Hoca Performance head and a stock head?

depending on what youre lookIng at, the hoca head should be the 50mm head. it gives you more clearance for the piston. im pretty sure that the stock head is made for a 47mm max.

Your going to realize most scooter wiring is in need of replacement.

I'm starting to wonder if i'll ever sort out all of the problems haha

It's got another flat tire, that make two in one less than 5 miles of riding. Must be something in the rim.
I also noticed the bars aren't quite straight. It's been dropped hard a few times I might not go crazy with this scoot since so much is wrong with it

Don't. Get discouraged. My scoot is down almost as much as it works. I just have too much fun tearing it apart and won't leave it alone when its happy.

I've got some parts on order, new kick start shaft and lever, starter solenoid and head. The old head has one of the exhaust bolts broken off in it so it's way too loud.

I've never done any valve/cam work so this should be interesting!

Does anyone know of a place that sells gaskets individually? I don't want to get a whole gasket set just for the head gasket if possible

get some sort of gasket maker....whatever your needs are, from a auto parts store. the stuff comes in a tube and they make all kinds....high temp, black, blue, red....im not sure which colors mean what, they seem to work better than a gasket you buy IMO.

I've got that, i wouldn't use it for a head gasket though.

I'm gonna use black for the cvt gasket, its probably the stupidest place for a gasket ever. As far as i can tell, is serves no purpose.
