Hi! I've searched the forum for an answer to my questions but unfortunately didn't find them. I live in Finland and by law the 50cc scooters must be restricted to be licensed as mopeds. I am going to by a scooter and I'm not going to de-restrict it. So of course I want the most power an acceleration within the 45 km/h speed limit. So the question is: will choosing a more powerful scooter make a sufficient difference in acceleration and in speed when going uphill? Of course I would want to go 45 km/h uphill and get to that speed as quickly as possible . So would it make a big difference if I choose a more powerful scooter, a 2 or a 4 stroke engine etc. if the scooter is restricted or does restriction make any scooter about average in acceleration and power? Another question is: if restricted scooters can't physically have very good acceleration, is there a way to legally modify a restricted scooter in such a way that it would be close to going 45 km/h uphill and not have problems with police / without voiding the warranty? Thanks!

Hi Welcome aboard Pleased to meet you If the scoot is restricted it doesn't matter if shes a 2 or a 4 stroke the vehicle will be still be limited in power and speed No way i know about getting around it but to remove the restrictions Take care and ride safely Yours Hank

Hi! Thanks for the answer! Let me rephrase my question: if we take on one hand some cheap no name 4 stroke scooter and on the other hand say Aprilia SR 50 injector, will they perform the same when restricted? I understand that the top speed will be the same, but what about acceleration and going uphill?

Hi HMM thats difficult to answer with out actually riding the vehicle in question All scoots whether restricted on not will have different acceleration characteristics If its low end torque and quick off the line acceleration your looking for i would recommend a 2t scoot over a 4 t maybe something like my aprilia Take care and ride safely Yours hank

I would say 2t has better accelleration, and hill climbing. From dirt bike experience anyway.. I have a 4T scoot, and love it, but it definitely was lacking in hill climbing, its getting better now tho..

To get to 40KMPH more quickly you need more RPMS at a lower speed. So to do that you put in Lighter weights to bring your rpms up and still be restricted somewhat on your top end.
Example: Say the scoot when you buy it STARTS to move when your rpms reach 2500 rpms and it has 7gram rollers.
If you change out the 7 gram rollers for say 6 gram rollers IT WILL NOW start to move when your rpms reach 3000 rpms. For every gram up or down on the rollers it will change your RPMS by 500-600 rpms. If you change out the 7 gram rollers for say 5 gram rollers IT WILL NOW start to move when your rpms reach 3500 rpms.
What that does is now the motor is already making more power to move the weight more easly. Wile

Thank you for the replies guys! Very good info!
Another question: I've found a few second hand Aprilia SR 50 Ditech scooters: one is made in 2003, but has only 5000 km, so I guess it was just sitting there. Another one is 2006 and has 16000 km driven. I'm on a budget so I can't afford a new SR 50, but I could buy one of those second hand ones. Or I could buy a cheaper and quite powerful Chinese scooter (Keeway) new. So what in your opinion is better to buy? What is the probability that a second hand scooter will fail on me and I would have to change some costly parts?

Hi If the Aprilias are in good shape and at good price i would purchase one of them For a 50cc scoot imho theres nothing else in its class performance wise stock from the factory and they only get better with modifications Take care and ride safely Yours Hank

I am now a proud owner of Aprilia SR 50, ditech, 2003 model. It's a beautiful scooter, very comfortable, fast acceleration and plenty of room for two! Thanks for all the input guys, I really appreciate it!

For 50cc scooter or moped you have no need of any motorcycle license but if you wanna go above than 50cc like 125cc or more above then you require a motorcycle license.
