Well the strokers power is proving hard to tame, This is what happend to my NCY variator. As you can see with the Variator fully open the 2 of 3 fingers could not take the strain and broke off. The NCY was made of aluminum, and I'm looking for a stronger Variator, Considering Dr.Pulley, Polini, and any other that would be strong enough to take the top end speeds I'm getting. since the stroker is new to 139qmb many of the Variators aren't stronge enough to cope with the power upgrade.. I need some advice .. Help ;D ;D

Well the Dr Pulley variator is aluminum as well. I wish I had some better advice, but I've never had to think about BREAKING a variator!

Damn, so the NCY variator didn't hold up? I'm not sure there is a stronger one out there, maybe a Hoca? Maybe you can heat treat it for strength! Greg Well the Dr Pulley variator is aluminum as well. I wish I had some better advice, but I've never had to think about BREAKING a variator! Greg Yea I'm really surprised too, Never thought of my variator breaking. My thinking is I'm getting 60 + mph speeds from something designed for 40 or 45 mph max.. Wind resistance increases a lot at those speeds. And the NCY for the 139 just could not take it, not really NCY's fault, I'm way beyond the norm for a 139.. The more of this power I harness the more i can expect problems until I get it all worked out. I was looking at the Dr. Pulley Variators, would like a better picture than what i have found to compare. Polini is a little larger variator 'but it's finger guides seem to be more a part of the variator that may help when it comes to the stresses at those speed, but id have to cut off 6mm from the starter bendix casting to use the Polini If not then ill have to custom adapt a something, I wish I had a metal lathe..

Thank you very much, Hank, I had not seen that but it was a help. v-161300 would be the one for my scooter.

I think the Polini will be good. One thing I noticed with my NCY is that the posts were skinnier than the guides so the backplate would rotate a little. This could lead to higher impact forces as the engine accelerates and decelerates during power pulses, this is judging by the look of the wear on the posts as I see only the outside edge is worn and metal is actually displaced vs abraded evenly. It definitely was a cause of faster wear on the posts and guides than with a tight fit stock variator on my bike. My stock variator and guides were actually a bit tight and needed some breaking in before they slid smoothly but I noticed they'd last longer and would wear the posts evenly.
The polini variator comes with its own backing plate and different guides and they fit tightly like a stock variator and backplate. So I'd suggest it.

Strange to see that much wear?,how long has this been on your scooter?sure it wasn't loose on the crankshaft, and you have very heavy roller wear. I run a 72cc with lots of mods in a heavy go-kart with a non diff rear axle all I do is chew the odd belt or two and I'am running a stock Chinese variator with light weight rollers and all is good. This motor makes a lot of power for its size and hasn't broken a variator.

And that last thouseand before the engine failed were very long and hard driven miles..

Hi Dawgs, Well I'm beginning to see just what happened, and why my variator broke.. Very Interesting and can be important to other dawgs wanting to upgrade their variators. My clutch Pulley size is 119 mm My variator size is 89 mm I noticed some damage to my Kevlar drive belt as well as my broken variator. When I lined up the damaged area to the starter bendix it became clear where the belt had rubbed.. Much has changed on this scooter in the rebuild, but other than the tranny gears and the Dr. Pulley sliders all was still the same from when Fawkes was a 72cc.. My conclusion is that the Dr. Pulley slider are opening up the variator farther than the rollers did, combined with the extra torque are pushing the belt up farther on the variator pulley than before. The stresses of this speed combined with the apparent rubbing of the belt on the starter bendix was enough to destroy my variator.. Measuring the damage to my belt the gouge distance is just under 1mm. So I'm thinking a slightly smaller variator, some where in the 87 mm range will fix my problem.. I decided to post these pics and results because this can happen to anybody putting the NCY variator and Dr. Pulley sliders together.. I do believe the Dr. Pulley sliders pushed my belt farther up the variator than rollers do and this contributed to my damage. So anybody running a variator 89mm or larger with Dr. Pulley sliders may want to check this.. So you don't end up walking... Take care Dawgs

did you have the plastic sliders in there ? they keep the back plate from rubbing the variator guide pins

Were you able to use any parts from the top box I sent you? I notice the rear rack is on there now.
