 installing bbk on scoot
« Thread Started on Sept 2, 2010, 9:31pm »

hi.

i am installing a 70cc polini cast iron kit, the morini ac one, on my 2007 tgb keywest scooter.

Everything else on the scooter is stock right now.

I am planning on taking a few weights out of the variator and putting in some clutch springs.

I do not know yet if i will need to rejet the 17mm carb on it.

I will try and post some pictures of the kit install!!!!

Polini the way to go?

Polini kits have a excellent reputation for quality, The cast iron is a great choice for most scooter riders. Although aluminum cylinders dissipate heat better, the cast iron cylinders tend to last longer.

I like the look of that scooter. Have you ever considered removing the Key West decal?
I think it would look even better if that part was bare.

If you don't rejet you'll run lean and either melt a hole thru the piston or melt the spark plug.

ya the stickers are coming off and i am going to spray paint the wheels, bright pink or blue or something. i think thats all cosmetically im going to do unless i can find some sweet carbon fiber stickers or paint or parts.

I read somewhere with the cylinder that you only have to rejet if i go with a high flow air filter.

I am going to use the stock exhaust and plug up the "air recycler"? tube thingy on it and maybe pull out the restricter tubie on the air box.

ill have to get some upclose pics of what im talking about.

You'll definitely need to up your main jet. The fuel also cools a two stroke; a lean burn will hole a piston quick or at the least, soft seize. You'll also get the most out of your BBK if you add a nice power pipe.

so ya got a welder.nice.so a thought would be to cut the muffler and "remove"the innards.then weld the cap back on.stock airbox will be fine.kindof like a sleeper. just go ahead and count on rejetting.you dont really have a choice.and as far as pink wheels.well to each is own i guess.

decided to install some malossi variator wieghts today.

I had to remove the clutch cover and then remove the springy kickstart engager thing.

Then i was thinking about getting rid of the electric starter gear to get rid of some of the weight on crank, but i like the push button start.

Put the 6.0 gram malossi wieghts in.

Overall a really simple mod if you have an aircompressor or piston stop. The variator nut was reserve threaded, almost got me, hahah.

I do not know how much the stockers are but the 6's feel lots lighter.

It did seem to have more low end power and zoomier takeoff. I really need some clutch srings to really get going but im going to wait for the kit first. It kind of felt like the belt was slipping. Maybe ill just order a variator kit with new belt and spring and stuffz.

hrmmm...

You will need to go with lighter weights when you put the bbk on it. and then even lighter weights if you put a good pipe on it.

Update!

Just ordered my bbk, its a 70 dr kit or something from sip scootershop, pretty cheap only like 40 bucks but no cylinder head, ohwell ill just use the stock head. so hopefully next week ill get that installed.

Scoot was making a funny noise in the gear box so i had to investigate.

Clutch was toast and i installed new clutch.

Pulled the sidecover and removed gear cover thing. Had to replace the secondary gear cause 1 tooth was missing. Overfilled with like way too muchoil just for fun. oh, also replaced both oil seals on the drive shaft and rear axle.

The spark plug was strange, predetonation or something, diode was melted. strange.

Planz: BBK installe, white malossi rear variaotr srping, drill clutch, 6.1 gram var weights, remove air box and replace with high flow, upjet. Maybe new carbon fibr reeds.

Your Benelli should have a Minarelli engine, although it would be basically the same procedure for the Morini. This might be useful too when you get to do your BBK.

Brent some of the benelli's have a Morini Motor also. I talked to Martin of MRP and they habe found some of them using the Morini Motor. Who knows how many have that motor.

had put a 65 main in it, but it was still super lean.

I could not find any body local here with 65-75 main jets for the mikuni so i just grabbed some 6mm dellorto jets and its working fine, i have a 70 in right now and the needle at the richest setting, better but still lean on the top.

this thing really needs a bigger carb/pipe.

I've gone up to as much as a 90 main with otherwise stock scoots and 70cc kits. These were minarelli engines though. 75-90 seems to work for most of them. I'm at 40ft above sea level.

Good info Bill.

updayte:

got some more jets. ended up with a 86 main for break in. an 84 would be better, but id rather it bill a bit rich then not.

tried some 6 grams weights in again, not so good. Maybe if i had some pulley springs it would be better, but for now the stock variator set up is fine.

Got the 84 jet in, needle on the second notch up, air misture screw too far in.\

Bogs off the line, bogs in the middle, bogs a weebit at the top.

runnning good, almost done with break in.

when im done i am probs going to go down to a 82 then put the needle in the middle and adjust the air screwer thinngy and it will be good to go,

feelz like my belt is slipping,

i was going to do a clutch/variaotr mod, but im going to wait till i ahve my exhaust pipe and big carb set up.

Taking out the guts on the exhaust will burn a hole in the piston also. 2 stokes are made to have back pressure and that's what makes them run. The bleed tube welding is a small restriction on alot of 2 stokes these days and doesn't change a whole lot in speed. The best thing is to get another good pipe made for a 70cc, now there are differences in a 50 race and a 70 race. There are different rpm per pipe. You will have to rejet either way. The 12,500 rpm exhaust are bigger in the middle and the other one is smaller of course and it has around a 10,500 rpm range. Either works well but if you want to keep adding get the big one. Most all popular brands will tell you the rpm range and they are all about the same. In europe they can only sell the 50cc race exhaust instead of the 70cc because of their emmisions law, or I know England use to be that way. The 12,500 exhaust are louder though. But cutting the guts out doesn't work. I'll give you an example yrs ago everyone cut the baffle out of their tomos moped and it sounded like they were flying but they were loosing speed all along and hurting the engine. I remeber them things sounding like a ultra lite airplane coming over.
