 Chilly Ride
« Thread Started on Dec 22, 2010, 1:29pm »

Well, it was 21 degrees out doors when I started riding my scooter. It was cold. I would crank the tthrottle 3 times and try starting it. The engine was getting no gasoline so I kept repeating this step. It finally caught and started and died. Another 3 cranks and it caught and started up. I sat there warming it up a good 4 to 5 minutes. After it warmed up, the engine would idle on its own. Now it was snowing some( flurrys), but not bad enough not to ride it. Now I rode to Casey's to fill up with gasoline( 1.2 of a gallon). I went in to get a big soda and people said," It is a bit chilly out there, isn't it" another said," About time to put the scooter up for the winter". I said, no, it still gets warm during parts of January( 45 to 50 degrees). It just stays cooler verses warmer on most days. Rode to the doctors to get some test results. They said, everything looked good. I rode up town( Belle MO) and stopped by a few places. It did not feel as bad as I expected, but my face mask kept fogging up. I would try breathing slowly to not fog it up totally. Wind was not an issue.. But it is suppose to turn off bad( 3 to 6 inches of snow by Friday) so I covered it up. Hopefully it melts away pretty quickly. 21 degrees is the coldest temp my scooter has been started in. What temp is your coolest temp?

I recently rode in 23 degrees and I felt like I was at my limit. I did recently order an oversized windshield from helmethead and I'm hoping that will keep me out in the cold!

Probably around the same as yours, after work a few times on my ride home low/mid 20's. One day I started it up in the teens with bitterly cold breezes, with the intention of riding about 20 miles round trip to a store. After 1/2 mile with nearly frozen fingers I turned around and took the car, was thinking this is not a good idea even before I left. I enjoy riding but have toned down my criteria for riding when it gets cold. When it gets to the point you are concentrating on just getting there and back before you freeze cause it is miserable, it is better to just take the car.

You'll really dig the Helmethead windshield, it makes a big difference to tuck down into the quiet shelter out of the cold.

With some good gloves and a couple pairs of pants and a vest and a scarf and a flight jacket, it's nice out at 25 degrees, and the only question is if it's better to go faster and get there sooner, or go slower, and get cold later.

It's amazing what leather can do. I've ridden in the teens on the interstate with insulated long gauntlet leather gloves, chaps, and a leather jacket with a scarf around my neck and up over my mouth, and done pretty good. All I would really need would be full leather pants--the only parts that got cold were where the chaps don't cover.

Shouldn't really be that hard to start. Some people redo their valve adjustments for cold weather--sounds like that might help you. You run a little extra clearance for winter.

My legs are o.k. in just jeans, wear a hunting jackets or leather jackets, leather gloves, and a helmet. If the wind would have been blowing, well my legs would have needed something else( chaps). I think, the valves need a slight adjustment, but I know also, riding time may be in between snows and may not have alot of riding days. I need to change the fuel filter, plug, too.

As long as there is no snow or ice, I ride to work. I take either the Stella or the qlink Commuter 250. Lately, just the stella . The Qlink doesent want to stay running in the cold. So far the coldest ride was a wind chill of 14 degrees and a temp of 23 here in baltimore., Gary in Dundalk

So Far 8 degrees Fahrenheit, turned the throttle three times, the engine fired right up NP, let it warm 5 mins before driving it. Now riding at that temperature wasn't pleasant.. I wonder what a blue popsicle on a red and black scooter looks like in traffic ? Brrrrrrrrr

I have ridden in 12 degrees at 45 mph. However, I did have insulated Gore-Tex everything. I stayed warm, but that ride was pushing my clothes to the limit!

Right now I'd settle for a day in the 20's that was dry so I could ride. Last month or 2 here in the Pacific NW it has been almost constant rain. Had some temps in the 50's yesterday, walked the dogs and decided to get a ride in. Was deciding on whether to take the SYM or the KZ as I was putting my helmet on, and it started raining again....It gets so frustrating at times with this goofy weather here. The constant on and off rain that kills most rides. Last winter I rode 50% of the time, this winter, november till now, I can count the number of rides on one hand, just miserable is the best way to describe it. If I was living in the midwest where I grew up (Chicago), I could accept iit easier. The mild temps here 40's day average with 30's at night for winter is not really that bad. Just all the rain.....ah it is depressing. Got all three rides on maintainers hoping for a dry day.

Ohhh my I think I would prefer the rain LOL, My scooter is currently set up for 20 degrees and below, so anything above 30 and it's not happy. It runs good but one can tell it's rich.. But me I prefer the warmer weather.

I'm so tired of winter and ready for sunny riding weather again, so I'm hoping soon to begin rejetting for warmer weather.

If I am remembering this correctly, for every 30mph of wind, temp drops 12-15* depending on ambient temp! So if you are riding in 20* weather, brrrrrrrrrr!

25 with a wind chill of 22. For Florida, that's pretty dang cold!. Luckily I'll never have to worry about riding in snow. Now hurricanes, that's a whole different ball of wax!
