Bought my united motors xpeed 250i in august 2010. I picked it up near Green Bay Wis with no warrenty but got a great deal on it. I have been very pleased with it, no problems at all. The performance of the bike is awsome. I had read this form before i made the decision to buy it.

Welcome to our thread garyb.

I'm not sure I would purchase a bike that had been sitting in a crate for 3 years. Coolant will congeal, gaskets and seals will dry out and crack etc etc.

gary

Did you get your UM at TA motorsports in Manitowoc. If so thats where I bought mine in July 2010.

Harry, If you remember, I rode my ONE year crated UM 1650 miles home without so much as a hiccup. Our scoots are 2009 model year. They added all fresh fluids when they prepped my scoot. TA motorsports is a big Polaris dealership. Not some goob working out of his garage.

Small world Gary. I paid $2007 out the door for mine. I have 6,000 trouble free miles on mine since last July.

Yes i bought it at t&a motor sports Manitowoc, I live in Green Bay, it was the last one they had. I saw it on Ebay and contacted them. the bike had a bad instrument cluster but they agreed to fix it for me and gave me a great deal. This bike really has the power. I put a trunk on it and wired the turn lights and brake led lights that came with the trunk. I looked at the china bikes but this was way better for the same price.

That is so cool. I seriously considered buying the scooter you bought and have it shipped home to NM. I was gonna surprise my wife with it, but changed my mind.

When I rode it home, I rode up to Green Bay and checked out Lombardi Stadium. Pretty cool. I live in a hick ass town, and had to have a momento from the road.

Hope your UM is as flawless as mine.

Got my scoot out of storage (finally) and took it home (about 65 miles). Still running strong, and in need of only an oil/filter change and check on the valves. Back in the commuting game in 62 mpg style!

Just 800 more miles then I'll be home...riding one up on the Xpeed...which will surely feel like riding a matchstick.

Hey Everbody. Just found this forum while searching for info on my new- well, new to ME - UM Xspeed 250i. I haven't had the opportunity to read through every page here but so far it's been really, REALLY informative.
My scoot is a 2008 with 1684 miles on it that I bought from the original owner about 2 months ago and so far I've put almost 900 miles on it. I couldn't be happier with it!!! It's a fun ride. Well, except for the windshield. I feel like I'm in a hurricane once I get about 30 mph or so. Anybody found any solutions for that? I've seen the post about the VTA Vario spoiler and it looks promising but I'm an even 6' tall so not sure if it'll work for me. Anybody found an actual windshield that will fit our scooter?
I look forward to reading through all the info here and thanks in advance for the help.

sandss115,
I'm the one who put the vario spoiler on my scooter. I'm 5'11", an inch short of 6', although some people tell me at work that I have to be 6 foot tall because I am just as tall as they are and they try to say they are over 6 foot. But my tape measure tells me 5'11". The spoiler made a lot of difference for me. It does make the wind go up and over my helmet now instead of smack straight into my face. One thing I really like about it is I no longer get the bugs splattered all over my helmet sun visor like I used to. I used to hate it when I would be riding along and a big bug would splatter on my sun visor right in front of my eye. I have the scorpion exo-100 helmet with a tinted retractable sun visor, and I can ride around town with my visor up now, before I put the spoiler on I couldn't, I have sensitive eyes and they would water too much. You need to get the right size spoiler though, I don't remember which one I got now but the information is in my previous posts. You'll need to drill four holes in the windshield, I just started with the smallest drill bit I had and kept working my way up using the next size drill bit until I got the holes the size I needed them to be.

UPDATE: Here is a link to my prior post about this:

Thanks wayneb. I found the post and I'm looking into it. I also bought a snap on visor for my helmet today and that in itself is AWESOME! Keeps all that buffetting out of my ears. Now to try the spoiler and see if that will help a little more.
I rode one up with my daughter today and that was........ interesting. I'm about 240lbs and she's about 140 lbs so it felt much different than riding by myself but it was fun and she enjoyed it. NOW I've got to get my wife talked into trying it.
Had my scoot serviced for the first time (under my ownership) today. Ran me about $120. I'm thinking I could probably change the fluids myself next time around.
By the way, my little "FI" light is coming on from time to time recently. I didn't think to mention it to the guys at the shop but has anybody had any experience with that light coming on? Doesn't seem to affect performance at all but don't want to damage anything.
Finally, I really appreciate this thread. I found out about 3 weeks after I bought this scooter that UM had gone out of business and it made me really, really nervous. Reading the good experiences of all the folks on this forum has helped confirm what I've been experiencing since I got mine- this is a great little scooter with plenty of juice that seems to start everytime and run like a top. Hopefully that will continue. Anyway, thanks again everybody.

My light 'appears' to come on sometimes...I hold my hand over it and it ends up being the sun. The one time it came on a stayed on the bike would not run at all as the tip over switch 'tipped over'. I was upright and so was the bike;)

There is a link to a shop manual 2 or 3 pages into this thread.

Unfortunately, you need a 'dealer switch' to read out the FI error codes.

As long as you have plenty of oil, you are not overheating and the bike runs good I wouldn't lose a lot of sleep over it.

Hey all, I'm still alive (if anybody cares). I moved in July and I've been busy working on the new place and clearing out the old. I'm now about 140 miles southeast of my old place. I've only ridden about 20 miles. I'm sick of work and want to have some fun. More later.

ccprof,
You need to quit working so much and get in some riding time once in a while, it won't be long and the riding season will be over.
I'm getting up around 5500 miles on mine now and am due for a new rear tire. Motorcycle Superstore had the tires on sale so I ordered front and rear and will attempt to replace the rear one next week. I've never done this before but have been reading up online on how to go about changing them. Scooter is still running great.
I used to order some parts from Alpha-Sports for my scooters in the past, but found that if I go to Alpha-Sports just to get the part number, and then do a google search on the part number I can usually find someone that sells the parts for much less than Alpha-Sports does. Just thought I would mention this since it is sometimes difficult to find parts online. Just ordered a part that alpha sports wanted $30 for, googled the part number and found the same part for $14 from Jim at Rapid Repair Power Sports.

I was successful in getting both the front and rear tire change done. I had a bit of a
difficult time getting the new rear tire back on the rim, but the front one went back on
easier. It seems to ride smoother over the bumps now, but i made one stupid mistake.
I put better quality angled valve stems on, and after I had the front tire completely back
on, I rotated the tire and the cap of the valve stem rubs against the brake caliper. When I
take the cap off it clears it. So guess I'll be leaving the valve cap off for now.

Got a little problem. Went to hope on the scooter this morning and it wouldn't crank. It was turning over fine but wouldn't stay cranked. After 10-12 attempts the battery got too weak to continue trying to crank.
I use a 5 gallon can of fuel and the last can I bought premium from a place that hash no ethanol in their fuel. I'm still putting in an additive to keep the gum cleared out. I've not really noticed any change in performance but it has taken a few more turns of the engine to get it cranked up but it always cranks within 4 or 5 attempts.
Any ideas? And can you jump start this scoot?
Thanks for any help guys, I'm really ignorant about anything with this scooter but I'd really like to avoid paying the local dealer $70/hr to work on it.

sandss115,

I'd look at the battery first. It's just not whether or not it will turn over, but at what speed.

Jump starting is possible but not advised. Frying the ECU is pricey.

harry,

Thanks for responding. I get what you're saying but it was turning over yesterday just like normal only it wouldn't continue to run. You know how when you hit the ignition it turns over and then starts to run, well, yesterday when doing that I would release the ignition button and it would not continue running as it always has to this point. And then the battery got so week it wouldn't do anything.
Anyway, I pulled the battery out and put it on the trickle charger overnight. It was showing fully charged but I didn't put a meter on it to check it. I put it back in and now when I push the ignition button it's turning over but it's either not turning over with enough speed, like you said, to actually crank, or there's something else going on that's making it difficult to crank.
Finally, I'll throw in this last little tidbit of info. I left the key in and on while in the bank about a month and a half ago which killed the batter of course. I trailered it home, charged the battery and it's been working fine since then. I had noticed the last couple weeks that instead of cranking up on the first or second attempt it was taking 3-5 tries before firing up.
Oh, one last thing. When I charged this battery last time I noticed liquid on the top and dripping a little down the sides. I assumed this was the electrolytes (?) mentioned in the manual? Anyway, I noticed the same thing when I charged it last night. Don't know if this is normal or not as I've never owned an electric start cylce before.

Wondering if a new battery might be a good investment.

Thanks for any help.

I had a battery like that. Ended up burning out my solenoid using it.

Most battery stores will test a battery for free.

Okay, here's the latest installment. I decided to go and get a new battery so I tried to crank it one more time with no luck and then popped the hatch and as I was unhooking the harness that runs from the lower part of the bike up into the seat assembly I noticed a frayed wire. I touched it with my finger and it turned out to be a BROKEN wire! I took a picture of it and tried to post it here.
I skinned the wires back and hooked 'em together with a couple of aligator clips and the scooter cranked! But here's the weird part, I unhooked the wire and it cranked again! Hooked it back up and it cranked again. I skinned the wires back and put a little piece of patch wire in between and cranked it up and rode about 4 miles with no problems. I pulled it back under the shed and it died and won't crank again.
So I'm totally confused at this point. I was sure that wire had something to do with the battery problems but it make have been totally unrelated. Now that I think about it, it's likely just for lights or something but I'm wondering if it's been shorting against the metal frame and draining the battery?
This battery is a 9-BS but I notice from an earlier post that somebody, I think it's Harry, uses a 12-BS. I'm assuming that's 9 volts vs. 12 volts?

I think I'm going to replace the battery no matter what and see if that solves the problem.

Any thoughts are welcome and thanks
